Code for Sustainable Homes
Often required by local planning authorities and most housing associations, a Code for Sustainable Homes Assessment is required to demonstrate a certain level of sustainability for a development. Levels range from 1 to 6, with 6 being the carbon zero.
What is Code? Code for Sustainable Homes (CSH) is an environmental and sustainable assessment process for new homes which provides certification against a set of technical and practical standards. The certification process is owned and governed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The process involves an assessment against nine individual design categories all with sub-categories:-
- Energy & CO² Emissions
- Surface Water Run-Off
- Health & Wellbeing
Each category includes a number of environmental issues, each issue is a source of environmental impact which can be assessed against a performance target and awarded one or more credits. Performance targets are more demanding than the minimum standard needed to satisfy Building Regulations. The Code for Sustainable Homes is generally assessed in a two-stage process (design stage and post construction stage) using objective criteria and verification.
What’s involved? At a design stage the process is very much a desktop assessment of the project drawings and specifications. Dependent on the Code level requirement it may be required to appoint other specialist consultants such as Energy Assessors, Ecologists, Daylight Assessors, Acoustic Engineers and Drainage & Flood Consultants to provide detailed reports to substantiate various credit requirements.
